Frisbee Spin Art

Materials Needed:

 Flying Discs

 Tempera Paint – various colors

 Hairspray

 Salad Spinner

 Plastic Wrap

 Plastic or cardboard box

 Newspaper

Cost:

Hopefully you will be able to find a salad spinner at a second hand store or get one donated.

◦ Flying Discs from OrientalTrading.com (listed January 2007) – 1Doz $5.95

Description:

1.  Before the program – spray hairspray over each of the flying discs and allow them time to dry. Without this, the tempera paint will easily flake off. The hairspray gives it something to stick to.

2.  Before the program – Many tempera paint bottles come with a small pour hole. However, this hole is too big. Place a layer of plastic under the flip lid with pour hole. With the lid screwed on, use a needle to prick a small hole in the plastic wrap. This will allow the paint to be squeezed out in a fine spray.

3.  Place salad spinner inside plastic box to keep paint contained.

4.  I setup chairs in a circle and begin by explaining the rules to Flutter Guts, an indoor Frisbee game (described below).

5.   Many like to watch while others do their spin art, but having a game to play keeps the more active from getting bored.

6.  Give a flying disc to each participant. The first person puts their disc in the salad spinner and chooses a color of paint. You put the top on the salad spinner and get that disc spinning fast. Quickly pull off the lid and let the teen squirt a moderate amount of paint onto the spinning disc. Then replace the lid and get that disc spinning again. Take the disc out and let the teen carry it to the drying table. Let this first layer dry before applying a 2nd or 3rd layer or the colors will blend.

Additional Resources:

Flutter-Guts (an indoor Frisbee game):

Two players stand 6-12 feet apart. One player tosses the disc in a way that makes it difficult to catch, for example end over end rather than spinning (tosses must be soft). The other player must catch the disc with only one hand. Trapping the disc against the body is not allowed, though the player may hit or juggle the disc repeatedly until it is caught. A catch equals one point. First player to 6 points wins.

Build your own motorized spin art machine: Plans to build a motorized machine and place to order parts at www.twirlapaint.com.
